Are you using steel wool on an electrical outlet?

While I was growing up, we repainted one bedroom twice in the course of a few weeks. I had chosen to paint the room a burgundy, but when the color went on the walls, it was just not the right color, and eventually we turned around and painted it a cornflower blue. I remember I was trying to get the burgundy paint off of the electrical outlet. It was not my brightest move but for some reason I decided the pick up, some steel wool to try to scratch the paint off. Please do not ever try to do this with a live outlet. Sparks went flying and I am lucky I did not electrocute myself.

Sometimes there are people in life that will be like that steel wool to you. You just do not like them. As hard as you might try they can be as if you are the live electrical outlet and every time their near you sparks fly.

God desires for you to walk in unity in your daily life. He desires that His children would be at peace with one another. Psalm 133:1 says, “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!”Ephesians 4:3 says, “Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. Romans 15:5 says “May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you a spirit of unity among yourselves as you follow Christ Jesus,”

What many seem to misunderstand about the concept of unity and loving each other is that it is okay that we are all different. In order for me to love you, I do not have to become just like you. That’s foolishness. God created us all different and unique. He’s not looking for a bunch of cookie cutouts. If he wanted us all to be the same He would have created us that way. But He didn’t! Enjoy your uniqueness! He wants you to be who he created you to be in this life. It’s not disunity if people annoy you on occasion. It happens to all of us. The Bible says, Mark 9:50b “Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with each other." Meaning strive to keep the peace, no matter what you might be thinking.

The trick to unity is two fold “what are you meditating about that person.” and then “what are you doing with those thoughts?”

Many of you have heard me say, that if your in situation and the sparks are beginning to fly, you need to be able to humble yourself and realize that maybe it may not be all the other persons fault. You have to start praying to God, “Ok, if the problem is in me then help me to change. If it’s in them then go show them God. I commit to pray for them.”

God is wants unity in the church. He wants people to stop quarrelling and gossiping among themselves. But you have to keep trying to keep the unity, even if the sparks begin to fly. Choose to hold tight to unity and not let go. Because unity is where the favor of God appears. Unity is what causes lives to change and nations turn to God. Ecclesiastes 4:12 says, “And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.” Meaning the more who are united together to do the work of God the more can get accomplished. Choose to love people today. Choose to continue to keep the peace and work together. God is doing a work in both you and the other person’s life. You have to trust that. God will make a way.
